Twilight had fallen. The horses were whinnying with exhaustion. It was time to stop. The men found a place to rest; their bodies were worn out and covered in dust. The shadows of the Kashmir mountains loomed over the vast plain of short grass. Emperor Alexander, helmet in hand, brandished his sword before the crowd. The moon appeared and disappeared, its face glowing. It cast a silvery hue on the blade’s edge, illuminating the entire plain with a blinding ray. At dawn, the men could not believe their eyes. The ground was covered in a purple blanket. Millions of saffron flowers had appeared overnight. Faced with such a miracle, Emperor Alexander consulted his advisors. The omens were not favorable.
